Jesus Christ’s love for us is compared to a husband’s love for his wife.  I have the kind of husband that helps me to understand the depth of such love.  He encourages me in life without being demanding or belittling of my weakness.  He appreciates my good characteristics, but is patient with my faults.  He is gentle in his power as it applies to me, but firm in his defense of me.  I am never in doubt of his commitment and devotion to me.  So, a while ago, I had to write a poem attempting to express this.

Knowing You

As a child I waited with impatient confidence

To meet the heart prepared to love and give me evidence

Of commitment to preserve and nurture chosen bond

Deliberate in each circumstance to wisely see beyond

The present human trouble, to act on promises

Strengthening the covenant to knit my soul to his.

Our reality fulfills that which the little girl did dream

With more than what the vision held, life with you would seem

To defy the worldly tendencies of battles and dismay.

Two who live as one in Christ, trying to obey

Principles revealed in love, convinced witnesses.

You love me as He bids you to, I reap happiness.

Through your daily constancy, gentle and profound,

Knowing you reveals to me a mystery can be found.

Once it was a blurry truth, somewhat academic,

Now it lifts my view, His Word again has proved dynamic.

Your love has made me lovely, uncertainties subdued,

I find that I am beautiful from living knowing you.

I supervise and organize

She tests her wit and really tries

To comment unexpectedly

And gain an honest laugh from me

Polite and gracious humorist

To common things she adds a twist

On cheerful help you can rely

Happy Birthday, 1 of 7!

You brought me to this certainty,

As You knew you would.

Your love gives me security.

You work things for my good.

Your love for me is singular,

Your parable explains,

Your love for each:  peculiar,

Though ninety-nine remain.

The vastness of capacity!

The fatherly desire

For every soul to be set free,

Escaping judgment’s fire.

Your love has made me fervent

For Your presence and Your Word.

I will never be content

Unless I practice what I learn

I beg for Your encouragement,

But wary lest I stray

To seek any vacant event.

Let not emotion cause me sway.

Comfort comes as I release

The trifles that distract

From communion that does please,

And joy results from that.

In love You ask that I rely

Upon Your daily care.

Frail and finite I reply,

Lead me anywhere.

Is there anything about my life

That hinders others’ hearts

From being drawn in belief?

Purge my selfish parts.

Use me as a catalyst,

Spark an ardent flame.

Show me any truth I’ve missed.

Devotion is my aim.

You love enough to guarantee

A place You will prepare

For us in Your eternity

Without an earthly care.

Eager for this one reward:

To see you face to face,

While having this to look toward

I will enjoy this place.

For this is where you have set

Each person, hopefully.

I did repent, You paid my debt.

Magnificence loves me.

Another Day At Hand

Pulling back the curtain on another day at hand

Thinking of my lists, but, then, not knowing what You’ve planned

At peace since I’ve been saved by grace, but hoping you’ll be pleased

With words I speak and things I do and attitude beneath

For though I see the beauty and the wonder of this world

I also see the twisted, painful struggle sin has birthed

Yet amazed at every turn by complexities galore

All mysteries to guide us to our Source, our Great Reward

So help me hear Your rhythm, all the patterns of Your Way

All other life is dissonance, disorder, and decay

Shower me with blessings or lead me through the fire

All that counts at each day’s end is:  “What did You desire?”
