Hidden Hinges Secret Key Cubby

January 28, 2022 by Laura Blodgett Leave a Comment

If you have ever been intrigued by hidden wall safes, such as can be hidden behind a portrait, you will like this. And it’s all about the hinges.

This is going to be an overview of the project done by my engineer-husband this week. If there is interest, I can put together a small ebook to sell with step-by-step explanations of how it was made.

This key cubby was made inside the wall of a normally framed house. If you want something deeper, you either have to plan ahead or do some remodeling.

He has made 3 larger versions of this in the past. It was for hidden gun storage. The front panels were artwork and anyone we showed the secret to was always surprised to see there was something behind it. For the larger size sturdier hardware was used to hold the swinging panel.

The key to the hidden hinges is the double hinges. This gives the appearance of a simple wall mounting of a picture or white board. This time around he chose a magnetic white board that we purchased through amazon.com.

Following are some photos to show what it looked like with all the hinges complete, then again after the magnetic white board was screwed on.

The front panel that the white board will be attached to is opened part way here.
If you were to walk around to the right and look at it from the side, you would see this.
Here are the hinges from the other side.
Here it is fully closed, before the white board is attached.
Here the front panel is completely open.
The magnetic white board has been screwed on at all four corners. A couple of the smaller magnets came with it. (My logo is an illusion of my photo software.) The business card is from the fellow who put in our sprinkler system.

The next step is to mount my decorative key holder in the larger top space. It will be like I have owls nesting in the cupboard. 🙂 The bottom shelf will just be a handy shelf. Maybe a good place for a flashlight?
